Driving licence 2027: the big change
From 1 January 2027, the first aid course (CPS) and the traffic awareness course (CTC) are both taken BEFORE the theory exam.

1 · First aid course (CPS)
Ten hours. Required before you can apply for your learner’s permit.
2 · Theory exam (50 questions)
50 questions in 45 minutes, 15 mistakes allowed.
Awareness course (CTC)
Eight hours. You need your learner’s permit to sign up.
Learning to drive
Your driving lessons with your instructor, at your own pace, until you are ready.
From 01.01.2027
First aid course (CPS)
Ten hours, same as before. You can take it before or after the awareness course — it no longer matters.
Awareness course (CTC)
Eight hours in a classroom, spread over four evenings. No learner’s permit needed any more: you sign up directly, six months before the minimum age for your category.

What people ask us most
I have already started — do I have to redo anything?
No. The theory exam and the awareness course (CTC) are taken once and are valid indefinitely. Two caveats: your first aid certificate (CPS) must be less than six years old, and once you have your learner’s permit you have two years to pass the practical exam.
How do I register for the theory exam?
You don’t. In Fribourg the OCN theory room is open without an appointment on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 12.00 to 15.45. Bring your theory exam authorisation, your first aid certificate (CPS) less than six years old, and an ID.
From what age can I sign up?
For the awareness course (CTC), six months before the minimum age for your category: from 14½ for A1 45 km/h, from 15½ for A1 125 cc, from 16½ for category B. The first aid course (CPS) has no minimum age.
Do I need a learner’s permit for the awareness course?
Not from 2027 onwards — that is the real change. You sign up without having done anything else first.
